‘Oil Slick: Series Two’ is a photographic exploration of the damage caused by chemical pollutants. Over the last 5 years, we have pumped an average of 17.8 billion Pounds of waste into our oceans per year. The main pollutants are industrial chemical waste and farming chemicals washed down stream. The effects of these chemicals render waterways uninhabitable for sea life.
By exposing my film negatives to bleach and detergent, I have stained the film with vibrant blues and yellows. This process was inspired by oil spills, which caused the surface of the sea to become colourful and sticky. In an ironic twist, I have been forced to utilise the damaging chemicals I condemn, in order to achieve the visual message behind the work.
